Unsure of where to start (or rather, resume)

Hey all,

So here's my long story short - I went ahead and full on bricked my Galaxy Note 5 trying to use xposed and root cloak to play a game that root checks (I know, I know. Laugh it up. I earned it). In the interim, I pulled my old Galaxy Note 3 out of the drawer it's been sitting in for like 2 years and once I get my insurance replacement in, I'd like to "scratch my itch" so to say by making this Note 3 my play-phone.

I've tried to do a bit of reading and browsing, but I'm not quite sure what I need to do to start getting this thing as up to date as possible - my goal eventually is to get this thing loaded up with an AOSP ROM and keep my daily driver as a (stripped down, root-enabled) stock build with a minimum of bells and whistles.

Right now the Note 3 is running a 4.4.2 ROM - I'm considering just flashing everything back to stock and starting fresh, but I'm having trouble pinning down exactly what I need to download to ODIN it back to stock and not brick it, since I never took an OTA (again, it was sitting in a drawer when the official update was pushed).

Thoughts? Suggestions? Affirmations of my dumbassery in bricking my Note 5 to play a stupid Final Fantasy game?
