Lack of CTIA (LRGM pinout) headphone support? Violation of Android Spec?

I recommended the Honor 5X to a family member. They also were interested in new headphones, and I recommended they purchase a pair of headphones that I like. These headphones are AHJ or CTIA headphones-- which means that they have the following pinout:

Code:

|^|
|_|  <--- LEFT
|_|  <--- RIGHT
|_|  <--- GROUND
|_|  <--- MICROPHONE

(Excuse the crude ASCII art-- that's supposed to be the male end of a 3.5mm connector where the tip of the connector is on the top.)

This is opposed to an older 3.5mm microphone connecter with a pinout of (Left -> Right -> Mic -> Ground) that was called OMTP.

The Android Spec for headphones can be found at the following link: http://ift.tt/1RuIxba

You'll note that CTIA is *required* for phones "except in regions with legal requirements for OMTP pinout". Given that this phone is sold in the US, it should work with CTIA headphones.

But in my experience with these headphones and phone, it doesn't. Music plays fine, but if you listen to the microphone there is a loud buzzing on the other end. If you research this online, you'll see that this is a common symptom of using CTIA headphones in an OMTP jack.

The same pair of headphones works fine on my Nexus 6, so I am certain it's not a problem with the headphones. I don't have a pair of OMTP headphones around that I can try with the Honor 5X, so I can't say for certain that this isn't just a problem with this device.

Can anyone reproduce these issues with CTIA headphones on the Honor 5x? Does anyone find that they can use CTIA headphones without issue? The headphones in question are Apple earbuds, if anyone is curious. To test, plug in headphones and use the voice recorder app that comes preinstalled, or just call another phone.

If it turns out that this is a violation of the Android spec, is there any recourse that we can take?

Thanks,
