flashtool takes long to extract kernel.elf from kernel.sin file

I want to flash TWRP recovery to my phone using the instructions in this thread : http://ift.tt/1mFP75m .

I downloaded the stock firmware 6.1.1.B.1.54 and extracted it.

I then downloaded flashtool version 0.9.19.8 for my Arch linux.

I select tools -> sin editor and then I browse to kernal.sin file, I select extract data.

here is a screenshot of what I end up with :

That's it, it stops at that point "Starting data extraction".

I check the folder where kernel.sin is and I don't see any kernel.elf.

I closed flashtool and started the process again.

It's the same and it has taken almost an hour now.

I patched flashtool to the latest version and tried again, still the same.

I also tried runing flashtool from terminal, because flashtool is started by java any "possible errors" are not thrown on the terminal(I guess it's redirected to the textarea in the flashtool Window).

does extraction take that long ? if not what can I do ?

Some notes:
I downloaded the firmware instead of getting it straight from my phone because my phone is not rooted and I read I can't get boot.img without rooting it.

I'm not willing to connect my phone or root it in order to get boot.img, the reason for this is easy : I want TWRP so that I can root xD xD, other rooting ways may exist but TWRP is cool anyway and I found rooting instructions on howtogeek(a website that I like) and they say to use TWRP so that's the way I'm gonna use.
