The phone worked fine with version v4.4.4 after the upgrade (v5.0.2) he became unbearably slow.
I do not know too much about root, rom and and so (last time I change rom it was on my HTC Desire :o).
Generally I would be happy if there is a simple way (or at least a detailed guide) to restore the phone to the version he came with.
