After using an earphone with mic for several hours, the phone stopped providing sound or transmitting speech in normal phone mode. Nor would it play sound for music or video. Oddly, sound and mic did work when the phone was in speakerphone mode. Google Fi provided a rep online that guided provided a wipe cache partition sequence and it did the trick. The only glitch is that the voice activated "ok google" seems to be gone. see yu toob dot com/watch?v=dCYqWS4JNa0 on doing the wipe.
