E: Unable to mount ' /system'

I wanted to try out CM13 and flashed the 12/17 nightly, reboots chaos ensued... so cleared everything and tried to flash my last backup from COS 12.1, it started its thing left the phone alone, when I came back it didnt boot beyond the cyanogen logo, booted back to TWRP and cant flash anything now, it just goes off and just vibrates, I left it alone another while and was able to boot back to TWRP, but all the logs say
E: Unable to mount ' /system'
