First impressions on my 1.45" zenwatch 2 (Zenwatch 2 is a single core 787Mhz watch!)

I got this watch as a X-mas present. There were other android wear devices and Pebbles but this one looked very reasonably priced and I know that 1st-2nd gen devices almost always suck, so I have landed on Zenwatch 2 in the end.

Leather bands crap. Watch itself looks nice with its screen off, looks OK with black watch face. Connection stability good, device performance poor. Motion tracking OK. Touchscreen barely OK(turns out touchscreen input is good with no lag, but due to the sluggish performance, my input attempts often fail.)

and some interesting findings regarding its cpu.

I didn't root my zenwatch 2 to investigate anything thoroughly yet, (until custom recovery is out so that I can dump my stock boot, recovery, system for safety.

But I have had a look into /system/ and found out that the watch is running on only 1 core of snapdragon 400 quad core 1.2Ghz processor.

The other 3 cores are disabled by boot script, and it seems possible that rooted device should be able to re-enable them by modifying the script.

And currently, the core is running at min. of 600Mhz and max. of 787Mhz with Ondemand governor. And those two frequencies are all there is. On idle, the watch runs its core at 600Mhz, and on load, it runs at 787Mhz.

Also, I do not know what frequencies average smart watches use for their GPUs, but the bootscript seems to lock GPU clock to 200Mhz.

Overall, I guess that the very slow performance of the watch can be somewhat improved after rooting. But frequency steps of only two does concern me a little.

I also had a look into 1.63" varian's system dump, and things are exactly the same.

So, I'm honestly little bit disappointed by its sluggish performance, but the hope of rooting and playing with it makes me smile again. I still would not pay over $150 for this watch, though. That does not mean over-$300 moto360 is better choice either, I think wearable devices have long way to go.

Great watch if you know what you're doing. Not recommended for a gift to your girlfriend or father or whoever that does not know anything about gadgets.

Plus : 1.45" variant does not seem to have a speaker built in. I didn't take it apart yet, but based on no speaker holes and lack of free space from 1.63" variant's pictures gives me a good idea that it does not have a speaker. haha. nice work asus.
