Issues with cardboard / youtube VR

Has anyone else experienced issues with using either the Cardboard app or viewing 360 VR videos in the YouTube app?

I'm currently running CM13 nightlies, but I've seen the issue since earlier last week when I was still running 12.1. Have not yet tried reverting back to stock.

In either case, it seems as though the pure VR functionality is working. The viewer area of Cardboard does show the 3d-rendered landscape, and YouTube does display the video. The camera also follows the movement of the phone.

However, it is not possible to place any input into the phone. It appears that the phone is receiving a flood of touchscreen input events to the middle of the screen even though nothing is pressed. At the center of the screen there is a constant white dot (similar to what is shown if "Show touches" is enabled in Developer options, however this setting is not currently enabled); there also is a black mouse cursor that flashes as well.

I took a quick look at logcat, and I'm seeing entries similar to below whenever I try to tap on the home, back, or recent apps icons:
Code:

12-02 12:58:08.389 30980 31246 I WindowManager: Ignoring HOME; event canceled.
12-02 12:58:11.401 31419 31419 V DeadZone: consuming errant click: (165.23134,44.030518)
12-02 12:58:11.644 31419 31419 V DeadZone: consuming errant click: (202.54164,69.35498)
12-02 12:58:11.835 31419 31419 V DeadZone: consuming errant click: (193.21407,62.690674)

Taps on the general screen area do not appear to generate any output from logcat.

I recorded my screen to show the behavior. When doing this, I also enabled "Pointer Location" in Developer options (but not "Show touches"), to better show the flood of touchscreen input.
